This week our beard of history is Yosemite Sam, the cartoon archenemy of Bugs Bunny.
Yeah, that Yosemite Sam…the roughest, toughest, he-man stuffest hombre’ is ever crossed the Rio Grande.
The roughest, toughest, rootinest, shootinest claim-jumper that ever jumped a claim.
Sam was created by animator Friz Frelong and his first appearance in a cartoon was in 1945. He was a hot tempered outlaw character in western settings, often firing his guns aggressively in the air.
Frelong created him to be a tougher nemesis than Elmer Fudd, who often came across as dim-witted and dull, somewhat a pushover. Note that this new character had a beard…coincidence? I think not.
As far as lore goes, Sam has been a part of the Looney Tunes universe in various formats over the years. Some of these include his own comic book, he appeared as faculty for Acme Looniversity, various commercials, and appeared in the epic Space Jam film.
To this day he continues to appear in pop culture. Where does his beard end and his eyebrows begin? I’m not sure, but I sure do have a lot of fun watching this bearded vigilante on Looney Tunes.
At over 70 years old, we hope that Yosemite Sam’s beard continues to make appearances in cartoons forever.
