#49 - Sigmund Freud

Our bearded brother of history this week is Sigmund Freud, the famous Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis.

Born in 1856, Freud and his beard began studying medicine at age 17 at the University of Vienna, eventually graduating with his MD in 1881.

He established his clinical practice in Vienna where he developed techniques for therapy such as free association.

He also discovered transference and how it functions in the analytic process.

Freud redefined sexuality and formulated the Oedipus complex as a central tenet of psychoanalysis. He also analyzed dreams, viewing them as wishes projected by the mind, giving a window below a layer of repressed thoughts.

He famously developed the model of the psychic structure known as the id, ego, and superego.

While contemporary folks don’t use psychoanalysis in diagnostics and clinical practices, it is still quite influential in psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy. Despite criticism from feminists, Freud’s legacy remains as many contributions to science, philosophy, and literature. RIP Sigmund Freud, may your beard grow forever
